I’ve been preaching to all you beautiful women out there for the last few months about how to make sure YOU are in the photos of your life. How NOT to let your children grow up and ask, “Why isn’t Mom in any of our photos?”. How we should forget about always wearing make-up, being thinner, or having a nice tan before stepping in front of the camera. I figured if I was going to preach to all of you, I should probably set a better example.
So, for Mother’s Day this year, I decided to hire a fellow photographer friend to snap photos of my mom, my sister, and I just being us. I wanted someone who wouldn’t be all about the poses, but more about the real thing.
Isn’t my mom beautiful…
She takes my breath away.
Yes, I have been on a major diet and have lost a bit (okay maybe a LOT) of weight, so I’m a bit more confident. But, the truth is, I think I would’ve done it anyway. I’m finally starting to realize how important it is to be PRESENT in my own life. I’m tired of hiding behind my insecurities. I say, screw it (to put it mildly) – who cares what everyone else thinks! I want to see ME in photos WITH MY CHILDREN and, yes, even WITHOUT!
This is the first step toward the new me! Maybe it should have been my New Year’s Resolution (you know, the one I didn’t make…).
AND, I will say this…I TOTALLY understand now about how hard it is to choose an outfit for a photo shoot…it wore me out. I also understand how weird it is to have a perfect stranger (photographer) telling you to be natural and do what you normally do while there’s a really big lens 6 inches from your face… It’s a bit nerve-wracking to say the least.
I promise to be more understanding of that now.
I love the edgy feel to all of Candi’s images. That’s one of the reasons I chose her to take our photos. She doesn’t usually shoot families – she sticks mostly to seniors, engagements, and weddings. So, I was super excited when she agreed to do our session. Thanks, Candi!
She did say to be ourselves…so, this next one is ME being myself. HA! Leave it to me to act like a complete dork!
I’ve always said Carly should model – I have so much fun snapping photos of her. AND, she is great at posing. This session was a bit more difficult for her because it wasn’t about stopping to pose. By the time we were through shooting, she was about ready to kill me and mom. It was pretty funny! It doesn’t really matter, though. She could be mad as **** and still look awesome…
Wouldn’t you agree?
I couldn’t decide on color or b/w for this one….
I also wish I’d chosen a different shirt…BUT, hey! Who cares, right! (that’s me trying not to care and just be…)
Carly is the comedian in our family. She is constantly telling us stories (usually about her) where there is some tragic mishap or event that’s injected trauma into her day. I keep saying I’m going to put all her “one-liners” in a book and make a fortune. Even if that never happens, though, I get rich off of every story she tells… They make me smile from ear to ear!
My mom and I are both complete goofballs. We laugh at every joke and have smile lines from too much grinning. Carly is the brooder. She worries more than she should. BUT, she’s the skinny one – Mom and I are much too laid back to worry ourselves skinny! I guess it’s a trade off, right?
This photo is me 99% of the time… ask any of my friends.
and this one is me TRYING to be cool…I’m not sure I pulled it off quite like Carly.
We really did have an awesome time…made a night of it. After our shoot, we were all starving and headed to Zios! It’s a good thing the photos were BEFORE dinner because afterward we were all stuffed and unbuttoning that top button…not sure that would’ve made great photos!
For those of you wondering a bit about the beautiful women sessions I’ve been giving away each month, THIS is the type of session I’m talking about. A session that is all about YOU! This isn’t a family session, although, I’d be more than happy to toss them in for a few shots.
This session is about snapping photos of you – the shots that never get taken otherwise. I’ll be announcing another winner on Friday, June 12th.
You can read more about it HERE.
Happy Monday to you all!
